As the days are now getting shorter and unfortunately the sun seems to be playing hide and seek, it’s now getting to that time when the remaining tomatoes need to be picked and bought home to ripen. We had a lovely hour at the allotment on Sunday collecting tomatoes which were still not quite ready to be made into a lovely tomato salad.
I’ve been googling many ways to ripen tomatoes and came across tips such as putting them on a windowsill (we don’t have a windowsill), place them where they can get some sun (we’re in a west facing balcony which is both a blessing in the summer and a total pain in the arse for growing things). The one tip that stood out and let’s be honest was not a faff was to place the fruit into a cardboard box or paper bag with some banana peel. We’ve done exactly that and recycled an oddbox box and I chucked in an apple core for fun! I’ve left the box unsealed as I like to have a daily peek to see what’s going on and have thrown a tea-towel over it. So far so good, it’s working a bloody treat!
