Here are some things that we’ve picked up to save money where we can along the way.

Seeds

Take seeds out of previously grown fruit and veg for replanting next year. We do this consistently with the veggies that we bring back from Spain and it works really well.

Reusing stuff

Reuse plastic and ceramic containers to use as plant pots, also good for making bee baths. Old colanders also make a fantastic plant pot.

Compost bin

Add household waste such as vegetable peelings, eggshells and plain rice and pasta to your compost bin for free compost.

Cardboard for weeds

Keep the cardboard from the millions of Amazon packages that you order and put it to good use on paths. These will help to minimise the weed growth.

Gifts

We’ve been very lucky as one of lovely allotment neighbours has very generously gifted us garden hose and a poly tunnel that he no longer needed. We hope to do the same when we have items that we don’t need.

Other allotmenteers will often have spare plants that they are giving away, make use of these for your own plots/gardens.

As we continue in our allotment journey I’m sure there will be many more tips that we can share so we’ll keep adding to this when we can.
